I have recently come into some family history.
Brothers Moische and Schimen Terespolsky immigrated to the United States on the
S.S. Bulgaria, arriving at Ellis Island on January 24th, 1906. Moische
and Schimen Terespolsky are the sons of Sam Terespolsky and Elka
Grossman. Moische (Morris) and Schimen (Sam) Terespolsky lived in
Manhattan as iron workers, on the lower east side until the mid 1920s when they
moved to the Bronx. Morris died in 1927, his wife Jenny and kids moved to
Brooklyn.
In Census records from 1910 through 1930, WWI Draft
Registrations, Petitions for Naturalization, marriage records, etc, for Sam,
Sam, Morris and Elka, the answers differ where they immigrated from. At
the time Sam and Elka (changed to Yetta, Helen, Ellen, Hilda and others) were
born the area they immigrated from was Poland. When Sam and Morris were
born the area they had immigrated from was considered Russia and after WWI it
was Poland again. Tpday that area once known as Congress Poland, the Pale
of Settelment or Russian Poland now includes parts of Poland, Russia, the
Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Romania, Austria and
Hungary. It is believed the Terespolsky's are from Brest Litowsk, which
was Poland, before Russia, then Poland again and now is currently in Belarus,
known as Brest. Brest is located 5.8 miles from Terespol, Poland.
Stay tuned for how I am related to the Terepolsky's.
